We arrived in Ambato yesterday around noon and after a failed contact with our hoped-for guide (he never responded), we had doors open before us and were able to sit in on a SL dictionary discussion meeting (there's a huge Ecuadorian SL (LSEC) initiative currently underway) last night at the association, visit the only deaf school in town this morning, and gather a sociolinguistic questionnaire and wordlist this morning. Survey is so faith-building for me.
Tomorrow morning we leave for Riobamba in a similar situation, except that we at least have a tentative location and email for the city's deaf school and the knowledge of when the deaf association meets (on Saturday at 5pm). We're thinking through a lot of options about where to be when in the next few days, and looking to make wise decisions about when, or if, to split up for a few days to cover more meetings/ground.
