We just got back from two Deaf church services - Baptist and Jehovah's Witness - and a lunch meeting with one of the primary Baptist church leaders. They were both well attended with 50-75 people at each and well done. It was the first time we had visited a Jehovah's Witness Kingdom Hall meeting and it was extremely well done - Deaf friendly, sign only in natural sign by hearing and deaf, with video helps from ASL translation done in New York, pick-up service for any deaf person that needed it, highly interactive, etc. There's a lot that could be learned from them.
We've been making good headway and may be a couple days ahead of "schedule" (if you can think of a rough itinerary as a schedule)...but that also just means that we're a couple of days ahead to give a little wiggle room if something else comes up later :).
We hope to finish here in Kingston/Portmore tomorrow and head to Mandeville on Tuesday. We're still trying to get in touch with another linguist here that has been working in JSL and Country Sign research...pray that meeting with her goes well. We also hope to visit the main JAD Deaf school campus (pre-school through vocational training) in Papine (a suburb of Kingston) and with a Deaf guy that we met tonight at the Jehovah's Witness church.
For those who care about quantitative counts, we're at:
RTTs: 2
Wordlists: 3
Questionnaires: 7
Obervation at Deaf Meeting Places: 5
